By André Karwath aka Aka (Own work) [CC-BY-SA-2.5 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5)], via Wikimedia CommonsMany women are concerned if they can eat citrus fruit while breastfeeding their babies. In fact, citrus fruits are one of the most allergenic products causing distress in small children's bodies. However, we need to have common sense when approaching this problem. Let's consider pros and cons of citrus fruit while breast feeding period.

Therefore, young mum should ask herself whether citrus has ever caused allergic reaction in our bodies? Is anyone in your close family allergic to citrus? If so, I'd rather not experiment with the use of citrus fruits, especially during the first 3 months of feeding.

If, however, we have never had bad reaction to citrus, you may start with small quantity of citrus fruit, for the beginning. As a test, you may want squeeze just a little bit of lemon juice and mix it with 1/3 glass of water.  All in all I wouldn't recommend introducing citrus to your diet during the first 6 weeks of breastfeeding.

In winter time, many mothers may wonder if they can drink tea with lemon.

If The answer is yes - you can have a cup of tea (or water) with lemon, while breastfeeding. For the beginning, I recommend trying adding just a few drops of lemon juice.

In fact, drinking tea with lemon (or hot water)  may be the first step that could help us to assess child's response to the citrus. If we try tea with just a little bit of lemon, it is safer for the baby as compared to eating whole citrus fruit at once.

Therefore, before we try to eat oranges, tangerines and other citrus fruits in large quantities, try a few drops of lemon with hot water or tea.
