Can you drink coffee during breast feeding?

Can you drink coffee during breast feeding? Can a cup of coffee have a bad effect on the child? Most experts say that one cup of coffee is not dangerous for the breastfed baby. However, you should keep in mind a few things .


If  you cannot imagine life without coffee , you can enjoy a cup of coffee once a day during breastfeeding time.

If you are a coffee lover and you drink it just for the taste of coffee the best solution would be to drink a decaffeinated coffee . Drinking decaffeinated coffee does not have to be limited in terms of the amount of the consumed beverage.

There are, however, a few rules which must be followed when drinking coffee while breastfeeding :

- Drink a cup of coffee in the morning to avoid possible stimulation of the child in the evening.

- It is the best to feed the baby just before or just after drinking coffee because the highest level of caffeine will stay in the milk forf about one hour after drinking it

- If you observe that your child is irritated, has difficulty in sleeping or suffers insomnia, you should consider whether you consume too much coffee during the day. Breastfeeding mother should not exceed 500ml doses during the day, especially during the first weeks of breastfeeding.

- If you are in the first days of breast feeding , try to refrain from drinking coffee. In the first weeks of nursing , baby 's tummy is particularly sensitive to the substances found in milk.

- Remember that caffeine can be found not only in coffee but also in tea , soft drinks like “coca -cola " or in energy drinks . Therefore, be careful not to overdo the amount of consumed drinks that contain caffeine .
